How to narrow an ant identification
Ant color is only a starting point. Entomologists also examine the antennae, the shape of the head, the number of small waist segments between the thorax and abdomen, the length of the legs, and the insect’s approximate size. The surface it is walking on and whether other ants are nearby can add important context.
Watch the video once for the overall behavior, then replay it and pause on the sharpest side view. Try to count one or two waist nodes and look for spines or unusual contours on the thorax. Notice whether the ant moves in a trail, explores alone, carries food, or enters a nest opening.
