Poison ivy identification clues

The familiar phrase “leaves of three” is a useful warning, but it is not enough by itself. Poison ivy usually has three leaflets, with the middle leaflet carried on a slightly longer stalk. Leaf edges may be smooth, toothed, or irregular, and the plant may grow as a ground cover, shrub, or climbing vine.

Replay the video and look at the complete leaf group rather than a single leaflet. Compare the leaflet stalks, the symmetry of the side leaflets, the stem arrangement, and any visible vine hairs. Common lookalikes include Virginia creeper, which usually has five leaflets, and young boxelder, whose leaves occur opposite one another on the stem.

Do not touch an unknown plant to test an identification. Poison ivy oil can remain active on clothing, tools, and pet fur. This video is an observation exercise, not a substitute for an in-person assessment. If exposure may have occurred, follow current medical or poison-control guidance. Press play and see which identification clues are actually visible.
