How to tell whether it is a red sunflower

Sunflowers belong to the aster family, so what looks like one bloom is actually a flower head made of many small disk and ray flowers. Red and burgundy sunflower cultivars exist, but color alone cannot confirm the identification. The central disk, the shape of the surrounding ray petals, and the leafy bracts behind the flower head are better clues.

Pause the video on the flower center, leaves, and upper stem. Sunflower leaves are often broad and rough, while several coneflowers, blanket flowers, and other garden asters can create a similar silhouette. Plant height, branching pattern, and the number of flower heads can also help.

Lighting and camera exposure may shift red, orange, and purple tones. Press play and compare structural features before deciding whether this is a sunflower cultivar or a convincing lookalike.
