Reasons a bee may hang upside down
Clinging beneath a leaf or branch is not automatically a sign of distress. A bee may pause to groom, rest, feed from a downward-facing flower, shelter from wind, or remain inactive during cool conditions. Some bees also sleep while holding a plant with their legs or jaws.
Replay the video and watch the antennae, abdomen, wings, and grip. Active grooming or steady movement suggests a different situation from a bee that remains rigid or repeatedly loses its hold. Temperature, time of day, and the presence of flowers nearby would add valuable context.
Garden centers can attract both managed honey bees and many native species. Avoid touching or moving the insect unless it is in immediate danger. Press play, observe the complete behavior, and use body shape and hair patterns—not behavior alone—to narrow the kind of bee.
