Identifying a North Carolina pond dragonfly
Dragonflies are members of the order Odonata, and ponds can support many similar species. Helpful field marks include the color and pattern of the abdomen, dark patches on the wings, eye color, leg color, and the way the insect holds its wings while perched.
Replay the video and pause when the wings are broadside to the camera. Notice whether the insect repeatedly returns to the same perch, patrols over open water, or stays near shoreline vegetation. The observation month and the pond’s location within North Carolina can eliminate species that fly in a different season or region.
Dragonflies are fast aerial predators that consume mosquitoes and other small insects. Photographing one without capturing it is usually the best approach. Press play and see which combination of wing, body, and behavior clues fits this pond visitor.
