In this Youtube Short, we’ll take a close look at what I think is the weirdest mushroom I have ever seen. Found deep in the forest, this mushroom stands out with its bizarre shape and color, unlike anything you've encountered before. Join me as we explore its unique characteristics, and unravel why nature can be so mysterious. Could this be the most peculiar fungus you’ll ever come across?
Documenting an unusually shaped mushroom
Bizarre fungi are often difficult to identify from a top view. What appears to be a mushroom cap could be a bracket, puffball, stinkhorn, coral fungus, or another fruiting structure. Shape, texture, scale, and the surface that produced it all matter.
Replay the video and determine whether the fungus grows from soil, buried wood, a log, or a living tree. Look for pores, gills, folds, teeth, slime, bruising, or an opening where spores may escape. A ruler or familiar object in the frame would make the size easier to judge.
Do not smell closely, taste, or eat an unidentified fungus. If you want help from a mycology group, provide photographs of every side and the surrounding habitat. Press play and see which diagnostic features the camera captured—and which ones would still be needed.
