How to identify a group of red tree insects
Bright red coloring is common among the young stages of several true bugs, and groups of nymphs may gather on a host plant after hatching. Depending on body shape and location, possibilities can include leaf-footed bugs, boxelder bugs, assassin bugs, or other unrelated insects.
Pause the video on the clearest individual. Look for developing wing pads, the width of the abdomen, unusually long legs, antenna length, and whether the insect has a narrow piercing beak. The tree species and what the insects appear to be feeding on may be more useful than color.
Avoid handling an unidentified true bug because some can deliver a painful defensive bite. Press play and compare the insects’ proportions and group behavior with regional nymph photographs before proposing a species.
